FIGHTING FOR YOU
AARP Michigan works with state legislators on caregiver tax credit
AARP Michigan is advocating for a state income tax credit that will provide financial relief for family caregivers who pay expenses out of their own pockets to help care for an older family member. Caring for a loved one can take a heavy toll, particularly when it means stretching your finances. More than three in four family caregivers incur expenses for caregiving, spending an average of $7,000 a year. The Michigan Family Caregivers Income Tax Credit would provide a nonrefundable credit to help offset the amount of state income taxes owed. Covered expenses could include: adult day care, transportation, home modifications, equipment and home health care aides.

New Law Creates Caregiver Advisory Committee
AARP’s National Volunteer President Catherine Alicia Georges serves on the RAISE Family Caregiving Advisory Council, created by a bipartisan federal law that AARP fought hard to pass. The Council is charged with developing a national strategy to support family caregivers that includes communities, providers, government, and others.
