Two cities received AARP Community Challenge grants to help make them more livable for residents of all ages.

In Lansing, the Allen Neighborhood Center will install a bike-repair station and air pump at Hunter Park, which sits on a major bicycling route between downtown Lansing and East Lansing.

In Detroit, the IXR Mobility Project is setting up an electric 12-passenger self-driving shuttle for older adults, veterans and people with disabilities. The shuttle, for medical appointments, pharmacy visits and shopping, will have an on-board safety driver and another attendant to assist riders on and off.

It will operate in the area around the Detroit Medical Center, the VA hospital complex and 17 nearby senior-housing high-rise apartments.
