AARP Eye Center
Has someone scammed you out of savings, a tax refund or government benefits? If so, you’re not alone.
Mississippians reported 17,403 cases of identity theft, fraud and other consumer complaints to the Federal Trade Commission in 2017. More than a third of those complaints were about debt collection scams, in which a con artist demands payment and credit card or bank information for a debt that doesn’t exist.
Scammers often target older consumers because they are more likely than younger adults to have a nest egg. That’s why AARP Mississippi offers fraud prevention workshops to civic organizations, churches and other community groups across the state.
To schedule a speaker, email the state office at msaarp@aarp.org or call 866-554-5382 toll-free. For more fraud facts, go to aarp.org/2017statefraud and click on Mississippi.
