The Magnolia State has a shortage of medical personnel, which limits access to care—especially in rural areas. The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration estimates the state will have a third fewer primary care physicians than needed by 2025—as well as a shortage of nurses.
AARP Mississippi will back legislation in 2018 that would improve access to care by allowing advanced practice registered nurses to practice within the full scope of their training, without a written agreement with a physician.
In 2017, AARP successfully pushed for passage of the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact. That law allows registered nurses and licensed practical/vocational nurses to have a multistate license, so they can practice in both their home state and other states participating in the compact.
