AARP is teaming up with the Montana Office on Aging and a coalition of other groups focused on senior issues to sponsor the annual Governor’s Conference on Aging in Helena, May 12 – 14. The theme of this year’s event is “Insights into Alzheimer’s Disease,” with a focus on the issues and concerns of Montana’s caregivers.

On the evening of May 12, AARP Montana is hosting a wine & cheese welcome reception coupled with a brain-health event.  The event is free and open to the public and begins at 5:30 pm at the Red Lion Colonial Inn in Helena.

Two of Montana’s most respected experts in neuropsychology, Christine Childers, Ph.D., Chief of Behavioral Health and Philip L. Rambo, Ph.D., Staff Neuropsychologist (both with the Montana Veterans Administration) will speak about age-related cognitive changes and healthy aging -- including risks for significant brain health concerns and how to live a longer and healthier life.

“Keeping your brain healthy as you age is one of the keys to a long and healthy life," said AARP Montana State Director Tim Summers.  "But staying sharp isn't just about brain exercises – it’s about promoting healthier living as a holistic way to support brain health.  That means keeping physically fit, learning more by challenging your brain, managing your stress, eating right, and connecting with others. We hope folks will join us on the evening of May 12 to learn more about this crucial and fascinating topic.”

This year, the Governor’s Conference on Aging is partnering with the Montana Gerontology Society to help provide people with important information regarding issues that families and caregivers face as Montana’s population ages.

This partnership also brings together national professionals in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and lifespan respite care, as well as prominent speakers covering a number of other topics related to an aging society.

“Being a caregiver to someone with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia brings a unique set of challenges,” said AARP State Director Tim Summers.  “As a progressive disease, providing care often means that every day may differ, but one fact remains the same -- you are not alone.  This conference will give folks a chance to meet and learn from other caregivers and health professionals. People will learn about the disease itself and the best practices in caring for their loved one.  They will also learn about advancements in Alzheimer’s treatment and research.”

The conference also offers a wide array of timely and educational breakout sessions, as well as one of the largest exhibitor and resource fairs focused on caregiving for Montana family members.

Experts in the field will give presentations on “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” as well as “How Stress Effects the Caregiver’s Brain.”  Additional session topics, speakers and exhibitors will be announced in the weeks to come.

In addition, the Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging will recognize all Montanans who are 100 years of age or older (centenarians) at a special luncheon during event.  The 2000 U.S. Census revealed that the state had 167 residents 100 or older. Ten years later, the 2010 Census determined that that number had grown to 277 centenarians.  It is estimated that by 2025, more than 3,000 residents will be 100 or older.  All who are honored will receive a proclamation of recognition from the Governor.

This year’s Governor’s Conference on Aging marks the 47 th year of this annual event.  The conference was first established to more closely examine the needs of older Montanans and help shape the actions required to address those needs.  Today, it is the largest gathering of 50+ Montanans, aging advocacy leaders, healthcare providers, government officials and agencies in the state.

The conference is scheduled on May 12, 13 and 14, 2015 at the Red Lion Colonial Inn in Helena.  The wine & cheese welcome reception and brain-health event sponsored by AARP Montana is on the evening of May 12 and is free and open to the public.
