Beginning February 1 and continuing through April 15, 2019, AARP Foundation is providing free tax assistance and preparation through its Tax-Aide program. Since its inception more than 50 years ago, Tax-Aide has served more than 50 million taxpayers and is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service.
Volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure their knowledge of revisions to the U.S. tax code, according to Tax-Aide State Coordinator Johanna Graham. “Taxes are prepared- free of charge- by AARP Tax Aide volunteers are filed electronically. Tax-Aide uses the same, secure systems the more expensive, for-profit companies use,” said Graham.
Last year, 318 AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers helped 27,160 people file their federal and state tax returns at 32 sites statewide. This resulted in refunds totaling $15.6 million and a total Earned Income Tax Credit of more than $3.5 million.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide started in 1968 with four volunteers working at one site. Today, nearly 35,000 volunteers serve low- to moderate-income taxpayers at 5,000 locations in neighborhood libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers nationwide. Search the Tax-Aide site locator or call 1-888-227-7669 for locations. There is no fee and AARP membership is not required.
