The AARP Fraud Watch Network warns that cryptocurrency scams are on the rise. Learn how to spot the crypto scams so you can stop them.

What is cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency, or crypto, is a digital platform that eliminates the need to carry cash. It is also unregulated and one of the preferred payment methods by criminals. Authorities warn that recovering the funds is nearly impossible once the payment is made.


What do they look like, and where are they located?

Cryptocurrency ATMs are colorful kiosks located in supermarkets, convenience stores and gas stations.

How can I spot a Cryptocurrency Scam?

Consider it a red flag if you are asked to pay via a crypto ATM. Crypto ATMs have become criminals’ tools because the kiosks look similar to regular ATMs. Victims are often directed to the crypto ATMs to handle “urgent” financial matters. A legitimate business and government agencies will not take payment through crypto ATMs.
