AARP Hearing Center
Harrisburg, PA— Today, Bill Johnston-Walsh, AARP Pennsylvania State Director, issued the following statement in response to Governor Josh Shapiro proclaiming November 2025 to be Family Caregivers Month in Pennsylvania.
“On behalf of AARP’s 1.8 million members age 50-plus in Pennsylvania, I thank Governor Shapiro for recognizing November as National Family Caregivers Month.”
Today, 63 million Americans — including over 2 million here in the Commonwealth — step up as family caregivers, helping older parents, spouses, and other loved ones live independently at home.
These everyday heroes hold up a broken long-term care system by managing medications, preparing meals, helping with bathing and dressing, and more. In Pennsylvania alone, family caregivers provide 1.39 billion hours of care each year, worth $22 billion in unpaid labor.
The toll is heavy: financially, physically, and emotionally. Most family caregivers work full or part-time jobs, and many must reduce their hours or quit their jobs entirely to make sure their loved one gets the care they need.
AARP Pennsylvania applauds Governor Shapiro for shining a light on family caregivers this November. But more action is needed. Learn more about our efforts and find caregiving tips and resources at aarp.org/caregiving.
