This May, in honor of Older Americans Month, AARP Pennsylvania joined PCN’s Focus on Aging Adults to discuss how Pennsylvania is supporting its rapidly growing older population. This year’s observance challenges outdated stereotypes and celebrates the contributions and potential of adults aged 50+.
State Director Bill Johnston-Walsh joined Roy Afflerbach of The Afflerbach Group and Rebecca May-Cole from the Pennsylvania Association of Area Agencies on Aging to spotlight critical issues affecting older Pennsylvanians. Topics included federal and state budgets, recent federal staff and budget cuts to important services, the importance of the Older Americans Act, and the expanding need for home- and community-based services that help people age in place.
With Pennsylvanians aged 60+ expected to make up one-third of the population by 2030, the conversation also highlighted the vital role of the state’s 52 local Area Agencies on Aging. These agencies provide meals, in-home care, transportation, and other support to ensure seniors can live independently and with dignity.
The discussion emphasized that aging should be seen as a stage of growth, purpose, and connection—not decline. Watch the full segment above and learn more about the services available to older adults in your community at p4a.org/aaas.
