After his retirement, Gary Iorfido began searching for volunteer opportunities to give back to his community when he came upon an AARP article about the Pennsylvania Consumer Issues Task Force (CITF).
“The work they were doing to educate the public about fraud and scams immediately caught my attention,” said Gary, who has a law degree and worked in the banking industry. “I reached out to them in late 2019 and have been an active volunteer ever since.”
Since then, Gary has represented AARP on the Dauphin County Elder Justice Task Force, conducting a presentation on elder financial exploitation. He also provided testimony in front of the Public Utility Commission on proposed water rate increases by Pennsylvania American Water in 2024.
As part of his efforts with the CITF, Gary conducted a session to law enforcement and bankers at the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators conference last year. He participated in legislative-sponsored Scam Jam events in conjunction with the PA Department of Banking and Securities and served as a spokesperson for fraud content through AARP press releases.
Gary recently discovered Senior Planet, an organization dedicated to helping older adults embrace technology.
“I have always been passionate about staying current with technology,” he said. “Through Senior Planet, I’ve conducted several classes for a local non-profit, covering various computer-related topics.”
Gary’s specifically emphasized how rewarding his work with AARP has been. “It is important to help people learn how to protect themselves and their assets from fraud and scams,” he said. “Given the significant role technology plays in our lives today, I believe it is crucial for the 50+ to have a solid understanding of computers and other electronic devices. It truly makes my day when I see individuals either learning new steps to protect themselves or gaining new skills and becoming more confident with technology.”
