Steve Orso - March 2025 Volunteer of the Month

At 68, Steve Orso has built a new chapter of his life through service, connection, and community impact. A widower since 2021, Steve spent decades in Information Technology, specializing in Help Desk support, global network management, training, and compliance. After retiring in 2012, he sought meaningful ways to stay engaged—leading him to AARP Pennsylvania in 2023.

Steve’s introduction to AARP came at a local shredding event in Bethlehem, PA. Drawn by the practical need for document security, he left inspired by the camaraderie among volunteers. A year later, he was on the other side of the event, experiencing firsthand the fulfillment of helping others.

“Over the course of the event we improved our handling of car traffic, shredding, and volunteer safety,” Orso remembers. “We used hand signals and observation only; there was too much noise for verbal communication. But the two groups collaborated through the noise and across two lanes of cars. It takes a special set of skills to make that work, and it was a privilege to be a part of that effort.”

Now, Steve plays an integral role in AARP Pennsylvania as a member of the Speakers Bureau and a Volunteer Portal Champion. He trains fellow volunteers, creates bilingual presentations, and shares his expertise in technology to enhance AARP’s outreach. In the winter, he also serves as a Counselor and Technical Coordinator for AARP Foundation Tax-Aide in eastern Northampton County.

For Steve, the joy of volunteering comes from working with a dedicated, diverse team. Whether assisting with Medicare 101 presentations or improving logistics at shredding events, he thrives on collaboration.

Through his efforts, Steve continues to use his skills in ways that benefit others, proving that giving back can be both rewarding and, above all, fun.
