Nearly 9 million Americans 50+ are at risk for hunger every day – a staggering 79 percent increase in just 10 years. AARP Foundation’s Drive to End Hunger is working to combat hunger among people 50+ through education, partnerships and innovative approaches that address the root causes of hunger in America.

One key objective to address hunger issues is to increase participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) among people age 60+, helping them fight hunger and improve their nutrition.

Volunteer Opportunities with AmeriCorps VISTA

AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers will work with AARP Foundation staff and volunteers to

  • develop or expand local programs to educate and/or help struggling Pennsylvanians age 60+ apply for SNAP
  • strengthen nutrition education for older member of the community
  • build coalitions with relevant stakeholders.

Through AmeriCorps VISTA and AARP Foundation you can make a tangible difference.

  • AmeriCorps VISTA, the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty on the front lines in America, has been operating for more than 45 years.
  • Your knowledge and skills can help those in disadvantaged circumstances.  To learn more about becoming a VISTA volunteer, click here.
  • Depending on each state’s needs, VISTA members have flexibility to do slightly different work, including developing a SNAP volunteers corps, implementing a train-the-trainer model, or engaging in nutrition education.

Apply online to volunteer for the program.

AmeriCorps VISTA is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens age 18 and older. Members and Summer Associates receive a modest living allowance. Members who serve for a year also receive limited health benefit options, childcare, if needed, and other benefits. After successful completion of a term of service, members can choose to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or post-service stipend.
