A specialized $350 million hospital to treat brain disorders will soon become a reality in South Carolina.
The new University of South Carolina neurological hospital will offer state of the art neurological treatments and rehabilitation beds within the state versus patients and caregivers traveling out of state for more specialized care that requires additional expense and travel time.
AARP South Carolina state director Charmaine Fuller Cooper said, “This investment by Governor McMaster along with the state's House and Senate leadership is monumental and will amount to life changing care for patients and families impacted by Alzheimer's, stroke, brain trauma and other brain health disorders. This new hospital to be anchored in the capital city is an excellent and necessary addition to the new brain health network of primary care physicians, neurologists and public health workers that has begun to improve health and reduce wait times for patients and their family caregivers especially those from rural areas.”
AARP South Carolina has fully supported this effort to improve brain health and looks forward to collaborating with the University of South Carolina on ways to compliment caregiver education and supports that are vital to the health outcomes of patients. This is a step in the right direction to making both Columbia and the state of South Carolina healthier through more accessible health care and by creating a more age friendly livable community.
