Starting this year, municipal and school elections will be held in June or November. Previously, they were typically held in April.

In 2025, the South Dakota Legislature passed a law changing the permissible dates for municipal and school district elections. Those elections must now coincide with either the June primaries or the November general election. The new law — which takes effect for elections happening in 2026 — also affects filing dates and other deadlines for candidates.
