Take-A-Stand....Because It's Personal

Social Security is the Country's "Pension Plan."
It is not an entitlement; it is a Promise!

Take a Stand art
BACKGROUND
Eighty-one years ago, something extraordinary happened. Politicians from both sides of the aisle came together,  reminding our elected officials of what's possible when they put the needs of our families ahead of party differences. They came together and changed the lives of millions of Americans by creating Social Security. In 1935, when Social Security was created, over half of older Americans lived in poverty. Today, thanks to the program, fewer than 10 percent do.

WHERE WE STAND
We might not know all the details about how our leaders in Washington will deal with Social Security – but here are some details that we do know:

  • 170 million Americans are paying into Social Security, and counting on it to be there for them when they retire.
  • Unless politicians act, by 2034, future retirees could lose up to $10,000 per year in retirement savings. For many retirees this means a benefit reduction  could be could be as much as  25%.

WHAT DO WE DO NOW
In spite of the clear urgency, our elected officials serving us in Washington, D.C. still keep on kicking the can down the road. We need to literally take a stand and show them NOW is the time to protect Social Security's future. AARP’s Take-A-Stand initiative is urging the presidential candidates to tell voters how they plan to secure the future of Social Security. We’re also asking congressional candidates to commit to taking action in the next Congress. It’s time to push our leaders to take on this issue so we can keep the promise of a secure retirement for all who follow.

IN CONCLUSION
So "what good will this do?" - you mumble under your breath. You will be knowledgeable about the issue and knowledge brings power. The power to discuss this issue in depth with the candidates - Presidential candidates and candidates for both the Senate and House of Representatives. The more we maintain the pressure, the greater opportunity we have to send the message -  Remember Social Security is the Country's "Pension Plan." It is not an entitlement; it is a Promise.
