AARP Texas Statement on Health Care Legislation in the Texas House

AARP Texas Director Tina Tran issued the following statement in response to remarks today (April 7, 2021) by House Speaker Dade Phelan regarding health care legislation:

“It’s incredibly important that the Texas Legislature continue making meaningful progress this legislative session toward ensuring access to quality health care for all Texans. Texans have been hurt by the pandemic. We have an overburdened health system due, in part, to a provider shortage. And there are severe challenges in delivering adequate and affordable health coverage.

“The Legislature deserves credit for advancing several important bills that can help to: reduce Texas’ high rate of uninsured, provide health care for more Texans through telehealth services, expand vaccine access, invest more in brain health, reduce health disparities, and make insulin more affordable. AARP Texas applauds those encouraging and much-needed efforts.

“However, it’s greatly disappointing to hear that the Texas House intends to package legislation that improves health care access with harmful and unnecessary bills. In particular, state lawmakers should not authorize junk insurance products that would discriminate against people with preexisting health conditions.”
