Celebrate the Chinese New Year with AARP in Los Angeles

Chinese Dragon

Join AARP and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Los Angeles on February 16th and 17th for the 114th Annual Golden Dragon Parade celebrating the Chinese New Year. The day of the Lunar New Year is the most celebrated holiday of the year for nearly 1.5 million people of Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese descent living in Southern California.

This event has a rich history, beginning in 1898 when the Chinese community's lion and dragon procession awed spectators at the city's annual La Fiesta Parade. Today, the event hosts dozens of floats, marching bands, government officials, dignitaries, entertainers, local business leaders, and cultural groups - not to mention firecrackers! The parade’s theme emphasizes ethnic diversity and brings families and friends of all ages together to celebrate and learn about Chinese culture. Thousands of revelers will line the parade route along North Broadway in Chinatown, which boasts an elevated Gold Line station for easy public transit access.

Members of AARP’s only all-Chinese chapter – the Greater Chinatown Chapter in Los Angeles – will be volunteering at the event, sharing their experience as AARP members, volunteers, and chapter members. The chapter, which has grown to over 500 members since it was established in 1999, is dedicated to community service and giving back, but also regularly hosts social events featuring music, food, and friendship.
