Where They Stand - View AARP's Video Voter's Guide for Washington State Governor

The upcoming elections will have a major impact on people of all ages.  But before we vote, it’s important to get as much information as we can on where the candidates stand on the issues that matter most to us.

AARP believes voters should have more information from the candidates than what we get from 30-second sound bites from partisan sources.  That’s why we’re offering a video voters’ guide with candidates for Washington State Governor.

See where Governor Jay Inslee (D) and challenger Bill Bryant (R) stand on issues like health care, caregiving and retirement security.  Click on the viewing window below to view our guide – the full questions are also copied at the bottom of this article.

For more on where the candidates stand on issues of importance to older Washingtonians and their families, see our recent article in the AARP Bulletin. And finally, please share this page with your friends!

Questions asked of the candidates:

Retirement Savings – There is a retirement savings crisis in Washington State. While the legislation is being implemented to create the Small Business Retirement Marketplace, what would you do as governor to encourage small businesses to offer retirement savings to their employees?

Caregiving – The CARE Act, which became effective June 2016, requires Washington hospitals to develop policies that instruct family caregivers how they can more effectively care for their loved ones upon discharge. How would your administration monitor hospitals to ensure that the law is effective for Washington’s 800,000 family caregivers?

Long term Care (Supports and Services) – Washington, like most states, is facing an aging population as the baby boomers become older and live longer.  Washingtonians for a Responsible Future is a coalition of organizations working with DSHS to study the public and private funding options needed to provide long term care for Washingtonians. What is your vision for how best to fund long term services and supports that will help more seniors live independently at home?
