When a family includes a military service member, the entire family is impacted. “Blue Star Family” refers to the immediate family members of an active duty service member. Blue Star Families earn this designation because the whole family is affected by the service member’s deployments and moves, and the entire family unit experiences time apart from their loved one.
All too often, Blue Star Families become Military Veteran Caregivers after their loved one’s active service ends. Military Veteran Caregivers often start younger and care longer. They manage situations other family caregivers don’t necessarily deal with. AARP is on a mission to support Veterans, Military, and their caregivers.
AARP is proud to support the 5.5 million Veterans and Military Caregivers in the United States who deliver voluntary, uncompensated care for their wounded warriors every day. These caregiving hidden heroes need our help to make it easier for those who wore America’s uniform to live independently in their homes and communities for as long as they safely can. No matter where you are on your family’s caregiving journey, having a good road map will make the process a little bit easier.
That’s why AARP has created a variety of resources for Veterans, Military and their caregivers. The free Military Caregiving Guide for Veterans, Service Members and their Families contains important information caregivers for Military Veterans need on a daily and weekly basis. It is one of many FREE Guides, Tools and Fact Sheets to help frontline hidden heroes navigate their caregiving journey at AARP.org/Veterans. If you, or someone you know, need more free tools and resources, go to our website: AARP.org/Veterans.
On Tuesday, May 18th from 3-4 PM EST, AARP and Blue Star Families (Bluestarfam.org) are hosting a virtual town hall specifically centered on Veterans, Military and their caregivers. You are invited to join AARP and Blue Star Families for Military Caregivers: Celebrating America’s Hidden Heroes – a virtual town hall about this important part of the military-connected community. You’ll hear stories directly from military caregivers and discuss solutions to the main issues facing military caregivers.
As we celebrate the Month of the Military Caregiver, join Blue Star Families and AARP for a town hall event featuring leading caregiving experts from the government, corporate, and nonprofit sectors. The discussion will focus on resources, support, and solutions. It’s time to shine a light on these hidden heroes, highlight their strengths, and lend a helping hand!
