Danny Gray Named 2016 Recipient of AARP WV Andrus Award for Community Service

AARP West Virginia has presented its highest volunteer recognition, the Andrus Award for Community Service, to Danny Gray of Ronceverte.

The AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service, recognizes volunteers who have made a difference in their communities in ways that support AARP’s mission, vision, and strategic direction and that inspire others to volunteer. The award is named in honor of AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, whose pioneering efforts to enrich and improve the quality of life for older Americans have prompted millions to adopt her philosophy: “To Serve: Not to be Served.”

A retired Greenbrier County educator and school administrator, Mr. Gray is an active volunteer in the Greenbrier Valley region. He serves as a state advocacy volunteer with AARP West Virginia, and is a past member of AARP West Virginia State Executive Council.

He is a member of the Lewisburg Lions Club and a Past District Governor. He is the Past-President of the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees (WVARSE), and the Greenbrier County Association Retired School Employees.

Mr. Gray is a member of the Greenbrier County Committee on Aging, where he serves as Treasurer on the Board of Directors. Danny also serves as Treasurer of the Greenbrier Lodge #42 A.F & A.M., as well as a member of Greenbrier Valley Shrine. An active member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, Danny and his wife, Patty, have two sons and three grandchildren.

“AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve,” said AARP West Virginia State Director Gaylene Miller. “Danny is very deserving of this honor, and we congratulate him and all of this year’s nominees for their commitment to their communities.”

Mr. Gray received the Andrus Award during a special recognition event November 14 in Lewisburg, where AARP West Virginia leaders also presented a $2,500 donation, on his behalf, to Lewisburg/Fairlea Food Locker, a faith-based hunger-relief organization located at Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg.
