Improving Traffic Safety for All West Virginians

More than 90 percent of adults age 50–64 drive, as do nearly three-quarters of people age 75 and older. People age 50 and older make 85 percent of their local trips by private vehicle.

West Virginia transportation leaders are hosting a series of virtual meetings to get feedback from drivers and transportation users ages 65 and older on how to make the state's roads safer for all users.

The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) is the lead agency for West Virginia’s participation in federally mandated and funded behavioral highway safety improvement measures.

The mission of the GHSP is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on West Virginia's roadways by encouraging, promoting, and supporting highway safety throughout the state.

Three town hall-style meetings, via Google Meet, are planned for September 2024. Depending on the feedback received, more meetings may be scheduled, virtually or in person.

During these meetings, state transportation officials will share current state and national data and ask for your feedback on traffic safety issues facing road users aged 65+. State officials will also collect demographic data from participating individuals by anonymous survey polls. No personal identification or information will be collected or stored.

This, in turn, will help the GHSP build and strengthen the Older Driver/Road User program.

West Virginia Residents age 65 and older are encouraged to participate in these meetings. Any West Virginia Resident from ages 50 to 64 may participate as well. You do not have to attend all three meetings. Each meeting will be expected to last at least 30 minutes, no longer than an hour.
