As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

Medicare Open Enrollment is right around the corner, and for Alabama residents, it’s a crucial time to review your health coverage and make informed decisions for the year ahead. The enrollment period begins October 15 and ends December 7, 2025. During this window, Medicare beneficiaries should review their current supplemental plans (such as Medicare Advantage or Part D drug coverage) and determine if that coverage still fits their needs.

The 2017 General Fund budget passed by the Alabama Legislature today will have a devastating impact on Alabama's health care delivery system. In overriding Governor’s Bentley’s veto of the budget, the Legislature has ensured that the state’s Medicaid program will be underfunded in fiscal year 2017 by at least $85 million. This underfunding of Medicaid impacts all Alabamians, because it impacts the health care delivery system throughout our state, whether services are delivered to Medicaid patients, Medicare patients, or the privately-insured.
The 65+ Heritage Quilters of Tallassee have issued a Call for Quilts to be displayed at their 4th Annual Quilt show. The show will be held from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on June 10 and from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on June 11, 2016.

Time is running short for the annual open enrollment period for Medicare, which will be ending on Monday, December 7, 2015. AARP Alabama wants to remind Medicare recipients that now is the time to ensure that your current coverage will still meet your needs in 2016.
AARP Alabama is very pleased to announce that Mike and Jane Moore of Tuscumbia are the recipients of the 2015 Andrus Award for Service. This prestigious annual award is based on the Moores' remarkable body of work as volunteers with AARP, and with their church and other community organizations.
Have documents with personal information that you need to dispose of safely? AARP Alabama, along with WBRC Fox 6 and Secure Destruction Service, will be hosting the final Shred-A-Thon of the year for the Birmingham area. This time, we're in Bessemer.
One of the best strategies for protecting yourself against identity theft is to shred your personal documents. Throwing them in the trash without shredding gives thieves access to your personal information. AARP Alabama wants to help you avoid identity theft by co-sponsoring FREE Shred-A-Thons in October.
Current college students are encouraged to apply for a paid internship with AARP Alabama at our state office in Montgomery. The focus of this internship will be Community Outreach. More details and application instructions are available at this link:
