As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

Medicare Open Enrollment is right around the corner, and for Alabama residents, it’s a crucial time to review your health coverage and make informed decisions for the year ahead. The enrollment period begins October 15 and ends December 7, 2025. During this window, Medicare beneficiaries should review their current supplemental plans (such as Medicare Advantage or Part D drug coverage) and determine if that coverage still fits their needs.
AARP Alabama is co-sponsoring a FREE document shredding and recycling event on Friday, April 10. The past year has been a very busy and successful one for AARP Alabama's volunteer leaders. Beginning with the inaugural class of AARP's Volunteer Leadership Institute that started in 2013, Alabama has been well-represented. The VLI was started by AARP as an investment in volunteer leaders across the country, providing them with training and skills that enable them to expand their leadership roles in AARP's national volunteer network. Each of these accomplished individuals was nominated by AARP Alabama's state office, and they graciously agreed to take time from their busy schedules to participate enthusiastically in the VLI training. We would like to recognize and thank these volunteer leaders here.
Tax season is here, and AARP Alabama and the AARP Foundation are again providing free tax assistance and preparation for taxpayers through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program.

Nena Bright Moorer of the Magic City (AL) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated conducted a 90-minute Life Reimagined workshop at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville on Saturday, November 1. This workshop guides participants through self-discovery exercises to help them decide what goals they want to pursue, and answers the question: "What's next?" Five 'Savvy at 70' and two 'Fearless at 50' women of the Progressive Homemakers, a social service club established in 1957, participated in the workshop, which encouraged participants to Reflect, Connect, Explore, and Act. Recently, new reports of a medical device scam have been surfacing in Alabama. Like a similar scam we’ve previously reported, these robocallers at times claim to be representing AARP.
