If you are gravely ill and unable to speak for yourself, who will make medical decisions for you? Who will handle your estate when you die?

These are questions everyone must face. Having an updated will, an advance directive (or living will) and power-of-attorney designations for health care and financial affairs can provide peace of mind and help protect against fraud.

AARP Alabama is offering free information sessions in several cities across the state to help people learn how to prepare critical documents. Go to aarp.org/al or call 866-591-8105 toll-free for the schedule and to register.

Alabamians can also download a state-specific living will at caringinfo.org/files/public/ad/Alabama.pdf.
