The American Civil Rights Movement started the journey to equality for everyone. In celebration of Black History Month, AARP proudly recognizes those who started the movement and through actions large and small, known and unknown, worked to achieve equality for all. We all have stories of success and triumph that deserve to be told.
The contributions of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Thurgood Marshall and many others to the civil rights movement are documented in history books. But there are many other civil rights ‘heroes’ whose stories are not well known. They participated in the civil rights movement in their communities, churches, workplaces and kitchens, unseen by the television cameras. Do you know an ‘unsung hero’?
