How many 85-year-old veterans do you know that can call themselves a country western musician?

Ray has always been a go-getter. He started working at age 9, and with few opportunities at home, he enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was only 17 years old. He bravely served his country for 8 years during the Korean War and Cold War. When he returned, he used the GI bill to attend art school, grew a career in the arts and later went into teaching.

But Ray’s creativity goes further—he loves music and always dreamed of recording a country music song. “The doors for Chicano artists in country music were closed. I never had an opportunity to do it, or the means,” he said. When we heard Ray’s story, we jumped at the chance to honor Ray and fulfill his lifelong dream. When he stepped into the recording studio in Nashville, Ray made everyone laugh by saying, “Hello, I’m not Johnny Cash.” And then, the magic began.

His original song, “Why Can’t I Be Your Miracle,” was inspired by the pain and suffering cancer brings. Ray hopes it will resonate with families who have experienced similar pain and can be used to advocate for cancer research.
