For nine decades, Social Security has been a stable and reliable foundation of retirement security for millions of Americans—and we believe it must remain that way for generations to come.

The more you know, the less likely you are to become a victim of investment fraud.
Ads for jobs guaranteeing you will make a certain amount of money or that you can work from home are probably scams. If you respond to the ad, you’ll likely be asked to send money so you can either get the job, acquire more job listings, receive supplies to start a business at home, or obtain special “certification” that’s supposed to get you a job. If an ad for a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

There’s a new scam we recently heard about. A resident receives an official-looking letter from a law firm in the state, outlining a family member’s prior criminal conviction, describing the verdict, and then stating there is an outstanding fine or fee. The letter directs the resident to send a check to clear the expense. If you receive a letter like this, contact local law enforcement.
In recognition of Black History Month, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (Wilmington Chapter) presents August Wilson’s play Two Trains Running. The play explores the social and psychological manifestations of changing attitudes toward race, from the perspective of urban blacks in the late 1960’s.

The Create the Good Dream Builders Video Contest is open through February 7. This initiative, in its second year, builds on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream” message as well as AARP’s commitment to livable communities and service. The contest invites individuals to submit a video about a “dream” volunteer project they are currently working on - or want to carry out - in collaboration with a community non-profit. AARP will narrow down the entries and then post the 12 finalists for a public vote, which will be held from February 15 through 28. The Grand Prize is a $2,500 donation to the non-profit acknowledged in the winner’s video entry to help bring their dream project to life. The top three runner-ups will win $500 donations to support their efforts. Please help us spread the word to individuals across your state!
Beginning Feb. 1 through April 18, AARP Foundation is providing free tax assistance and preparation through its Tax-Aide program. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, in its 49th year, is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, offering free tax preparation help to anyone, especially those who are 50 and older, who cannot afford a tax preparation service.
To recognize their work to support family caregivers in Delaware, AARP named four Legislators as 2016 “Capitol Caregivers,” on Jan. 11 as part of a bipartisan group of elected officials from more than 23 states. These leaders have advanced policies to help family caregivers who are making it possible for all Delawareans to live independently in their homes and communities—where they want to be.
