Relationships gone wrong can result in more than hurt feelings. For victims of online dating scams, the cost could be financial as well.
The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center received nearly 15,000 complaints of romance scams nationwide in 2016, with losses exceeding $230 million. Typically, the con artist feigns romantic interest to gain a victim’s affection, then faces a “crisis” and asks for money.
AARP Georgia will host a panel discussion on romance scams this fall and is asking members in the Atlanta area to share their personal stories. Your experience and insights could help save others from a similar fate.
Willing to share your story? If so, email Charima C. Young of AARP Georgia at ccyoung@aarp.org or call her at 404-870-3785.
