Tackling Health Disparities During Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month – a time to honor and celebrate the contributions of woman across time, geography and culture. Inspired by our woman founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, AARP has sought to tackle some of the most pressing social issues facing people over the age of 50 for the past 60-plus years.

Dr. Andrus was a visionary and an advocate for social change. After discovering a friend and former teacher living in a chicken coop with no home and no healthcare, Dr. Andrus began a crusade for social change from which AARP was born.

Today, we continue to strive toward a vision where people at every life stage can maximize the opportunity of a longer life with purpose and dignity and are provided with meaningful access to the services and opportunities that allow them to thrive. But to achieve that vision, we must address the issue of disparities. We must acknowledge that racial and ethnic disparities exist across sectors and we must endeavor to spark conversations and solutions that help to reduce or eliminate the barriers and circumstances that create these disparities.

Lack of access to healthcare coverage, the very issue upon which AARP was founded, still exists today and it disproportionally impacts communities of color. Research also continues to show racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes and healthcare spending.

On March 24th at 7:00pm, AARP will host “Cultural Conversations: Sistas Having Their Say” – a discussion on disparities in women’s heart health co-moderated by Sybil Wilkes and Myra J from the Tom Joyner morning show. We’ll tackle some hard conversations with expert panelists from the American Heart Association, Black Voters Matter and the African American Network Against Alzheimer’s.

This event is free and open to the public but registration is required.
