In the early 1900s, the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma, now called "Black Wall Street," was a vibrant and prosperous community. Despite the challenges and racial injustices they faced, residents of this community built a thriving neighborhood filled with successful Black-owned businesses, attorneys, doctors, and real estate agents. Their achievements were nothing short of remarkable and served as a beacon of hope for Black Americans nationwide.

Women's History Month is underway, and we're excited to celebrate the ground-breaking contributions of amazing women to communities nationwide. Originating as Women's History Week in 1981, March was officially dedicated to honoring women's achievements in 1987. And AARP joins in the nation in celebrating women for their leadership, mentoring, and dedication to their communities in ways that have changed the course of history.

AARP members and military veterans can refresh their paletes with paletas, a South American frozen fruit treat, and get information on AARP activities in East Hawai`i at a free Paletas in the Park member and veterans appreciation event in Hilo on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Thirty-seven million Americans are hooked on the sport, swatting small plastic balls, on converted tennis courts all over Oahu to play pickle ball. If you want to join them, AARP Hawai`i is holding an “Introduction to Pickle Ball” class at the gym at Waimanalo District Park on Friday, Feb. 24.

To help lessen the impact of social isolation on Valentine’s Day, Wish of a Lifetime from AARP’s 10th annual Cupid Crew and AARP Hawai`i will hand deliver about 6,400 roses and more than 800 hand-made Valentine’s Day cards to kupuna on Oahu, Maui and Hawai`i island. It’s part of a national effort to deliver more than 100,000 roses and nearly 250,000 cards to fight social isolation.
