Disaster Prep: Protecting Residents During Emergencies

AARP Hawai‘i will focus legislative efforts this year on mitigating the disproportionate risks faced by older adults during public emergencies. The Legislature opens this month.

In natural disasters and other extreme weather events, older adults die at higher rates than their younger counterparts. They often have mobility issues and can’t easily evacuate. Nearly three-quarters of the identified victims who died in the Lahaina wildfire were 60 and over.
