The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) stopped the biggest gas rate hike in Illinois history, cutting a proposed $314 million increase from Nicor Gas by almost 50 percent, on the heels of months of public outcry and advocacy by AARP Illinois, including 35,000 petitions signed by AARP members.

Nine Illinois entities received a total of more than $90,000 in AARP Community Challenge grants in 2025. Projects include home repairs for older residents in Chicago, new outdoor seating in the village of Erie, disaster preparedness training in Skokie and digital literacy workshops in Evanston.

A new AARP survey, released in conjunction with Social Security’s 90th anniversary, confirms that Americans highly value Social Security, and even more so than five years ago. The vast majority of Americans – 95% of Republicans, 98% of Democrats, and 93% of Independents – consider Social Security vital to the financial security of all Americans, and 67% believe it is even more important for retirees than it was five years ago.
