AARP Iowa is reminding Iowans that over-the-counter hearing aids are available under federal rules implemented last year.
Previously, people had to get a prescription from a hearing professional. Now, Americans can buy aids to address mild to moderate hearing loss directly from stores or online retailers—often at a fraction of the cost—without a medical exam, prescription or fitting by an audiologist. (Severe hearing loss still requires a prescription device.)
Although the new over-the-counter option has made it easier to get hearing aids, consumers still need to do research. Learn about hearing loss and device options at the AARP Hearing Center website.
