Proposal Would Boost Funding for Home Care Services in Iowa

caregiving

AARP is promoting a plan to help more Iowans receive long-term care services in their homes.

AARP recently commissioned a poll that found 97 percent of state residents believe it is important to have services that allow them to remain in their homes and communities as long as possible. But about three-fourths of Iowa’s spending on long-term care goes to institutional settings, such as nursing homes.

Iowa’s Medicaid program has proposed using federal American Rescue Plan funds to expand home- and community-based services by building the home health care workforce and helping providers cover wider geographic areas.

The new policies, supported by AARP, represent an opportunity to reshape how Iowans receive health care as they age.
