AARP is launching Countdown to 90 Years—a recognition and call to action leading up to the 90th anniversary of Social Security on August 14, 2025. For nine decades, Social Security has been a stable and reliable foundation of retirement security for millions of Americans—and we believe it must remain that way for generations to come.

A new AARP survey, released in conjunction with Social Security’s 90th anniversary, confirms that Americans highly value Social Security, and even more so than five years ago. The vast majority of Americans – 95% of Republicans, 98% of Democrats, and 93% of Independents – consider Social Security vital to the financial security of all Americans, and 67% believe it is even more important for retirees than it was five years ago.
AARP Kansas is pleased to announce the appointment of John Settich, Atchison, to the Executive Council. Settich, who chose teaching as his encore career, earned his doctorate in public policy-political science at age 56 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Originally from St. Louis, his first career was politics in Kansas in local government and finally serving the late Congressman Bill Roy as press secretary.
AARP Kansas is pleased to participate in this year's Financial Freedom Expo and Summit which will be held on Saturday, April 18 in Wichita. The theme for this year’s Expo is “Get Your Money Right”! The Financial Freedom Expo is an official event of Money Smart Kansas, an annual outreach initiative designed to promote and encourage financial awareness for all ages through classes, workshops and the delivery of various resources. The event is free and open to the public.
AARP Kansas continues to urge Kansas legislators to pass the Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act to support the more than 605,000 caregivers in our state who provide care to their loved ones, enabling them to continue living at home. AARP’s Capital City Task Force (CCTF) members, led by volunteer Judy Bellome and AARP Kansas Advocacy Director Ernie Kutzley, have been spending hours at the Kansas Statehouse talking to legislators, administration officials and representatives of other organizations, including the Kansas Hospital Association, in efforts to garner support for the legislation.
The location for the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC)public hearing on the the Kansas City Power & Light (KCP &L) rate increase request has been changed. The public hearing will now take place on May 18, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at the KU Edwards Campus, BEST Conference Center, 12604 Quivira Road, Overland Park, KS 66213. Earlier the location had been set for Olathe Northwest High School in Olathe.
On Monday, March 2, 2015, Westar Energy filed for a $152 million rate increase with the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC).
