Don't Get Played by Scammers

Scam Jam

AARP Kansas is helping residents avoid falling victim to the latest scams by offering fraud prevention presentations to community groups.

AARP Fraud Watch Network volunteers explain how to avoid identity theft and recognize phone scams, among other tips.

Kansans lost $9.8 million as the result of nearly 16,000 reported scams in 2018, according to the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book.

Popular schemes for hucksters in Kansas included impostor cons, debt-collection scams and identity theft.

In addition, the report found that people age 70 and over lost a median of $750 per scam—nearly twice the amount lost by those age 40 and younger.
