AARP Eye Center
For the third year in a row, AARP Kansas is seeking legislation that could improve communication between hospitals and family caregivers. State lawmakers will consider the proposed bill during the session that begins Jan. 9.
The bill would allow every hospital patient to designate a caregiver and would require the hospital to record the caregiver's contact information in the patient’s chart. The hospital would make reasonable efforts to inform the caregiver about discharge plans and show the caregiver how to perform follow-up medical tasks the patient will need at home.
An estimated 345,000 Kansans serve as family caregivers. AARP Kansas is asking members to help press for the bill. Advocacy volunteers will receive training in November and December. To get involved, call 866-448-3619 toll-free or email ksaarp@aarp.org.
