Useful Information for Family Caregivers

AARP Kansas is spreading the word about a new law that aims to help family caregivers be better prepared when a loved one comes home from a hospital stay. Trained volunteers are available to give presentations about the law to community groups across the state.

In 2017, lawmakers passed the Kansas Lay Caregiver Act (or CARE Act), which will take effect July 1. Under the law, every hospital patient can designate a caregiver. Hospitals must then make reasonable efforts to notify the caregiver about discharge plans and to prepare the caregiver for the patient’s follow-up medical needs.

About 345,000 Kansans serve as family caregivers, providing about $3.8 billion worth of unpaid services each year.
