As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older Kansans—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

Join AARP Kansas each week on Monday's at noon for the Sunflower Scoop. Every week, we showcase an AARP Kansas volunteer talking about a particular topic he or she has expertise in or demonstrating a "how to" tip. Each video is less than five minutes long. So far we've learned how to scoop out a pumpkin for pumpkin pie, how to write a blog, what to do with outdoor plants during winter months, and how to draw an eyeball. There's something for everyone. The husband and wife team of Maryanne Esteban and Bill Blankenship, Kansas City, has been selected by AARP, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive the 2020 AARP Kansas Andrus Award for Community Service -- the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.
AARP awarded 2020 Community Challenge grants to two cities to help make public transit more accessible for older adults and to encourage Kansas residents to fix up their porches as a way to improve their neighborhoods.
