Kentucky Primary Election Day - June 23, 2020

A lot has changed due to COVID-19, but not your right to vote. State leaders are encouraging all Kentuckians to stay safe and vote absentee in the June 23rd Primary Election. AARP Kentucky collected the resources and information you need to vote safely in the Primary Elections.

With new options for voting in Kentucky during the COVID-19 outbreak, the changes can be confusing. But, knowing what the new voting requirements and deadlines are, you can successfully make a voting plan for the state's new Primary Day (Tuesday, June 23, 2020)

Kentucky Online Absentee Ballot
Voting by absentee ballot is simple, secure, and safe. Just follow these steps:
Registered Kentucky voters may now request an absentee ballot for the Primary Election.

Go directly to the Kentucky Board of Elections new portal to begin your absentee ballot request: Online Absentee Ballot (https://vrsws.sos.ky.gov/abrweb/)

  • All eligible registered voters in Kentucky may now request an absentee ballot
  • Apply online to receive your ballot (Board of Elections Portal is live: www.govoteky.com)
  • Fill it out and mail it back
  • Completed ballots must be returned (or postmarked) by June 23rd (at no cost - postage is pre-paid)
  • Find your County Clerk online, here.
  • Contact Kentucky Board of Elections 1-800-246-1399 (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. EST)

Key Dates: Primary Elections
April 23: Joint Executive Order 2020-01 moves state's Primary Election to June 23
May 22: State Board of Elections mailing postcard to all Kentucky voters
May 22: State Board of Elections Voter Portal launches (https://elect.ky.gov)
May 26: Kentucky voters' deadline to register to vote or update their registration for the Primary Election.
June 1: Join AARP and KY Secretary of State Michael Adams for a Live Tele-Town Hall
11:00 a.m. EST (To join, call: 1-877-229-8493 Enter Code: 115392)
June 15: All Mail-in Absentee Ballot Applications must be returned (or postmarked by 11:59 p.m. local time)
June 23: Primary Election Day (completed ballots must be returned or postmarked by 11:59 p.m. local time)

Make Your Voting Plan
Kentuckians now have three choices to cast their ballot in the Primary Elections: vote absentee by mail, by appointment for in-person voting, and limited in-person voting on election day. Kentucky voters are encouraged to make a “Voting Plan” in advance:

  • checking your voter registration details, here.
  • preparing required documentation (DOB, Social Security Number, KY Driver License Number)
  • applying for Mail-In Absentee Ballot (before close of business June 15)
  • contacting your County Clerk Office for appointment at reduced voting locations, times and local ballot "drop-off boxes"
  • viewing of sample ballots at Kentucky State Board of Elections https://elect.ky.gov or your local County Clerk Office
