Reliable Internet is Essential

In today’s world, fast and affordable internet isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. From accessing healthcare to staying in touch with loved ones, reliable internet is essential for daily life. And for older Mainers, the stakes are even higher.

Bridging the Digital Divide in Maine

AARP is working alongside the Maine Connectivity Authority (MCA) and other partners to close the “digital divide”—the gap between those who have access to high-speed internet and those who don’t. This effort is about more than just infrastructure; it’s about fairness. Everyone, regardless of age, income, or location, deserves the ability to get online safely and confidently.

In September, MCA submitted Maine’s final proposal for the BEAD (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment) program. This initiative, part of a federal law, could bring up to $272 million to Maine to expand broadband access and provide digital skills training.

It’s About More Than Just Getting Online

Access alone isn’t enough. People also need the skills and support to use the internet effectively. That means ensuring Mainers have devices like computers or tablets, and the training to use them confidently.

With the right tools, older adults can:

  • Take online classes
  • Apply for jobs
  • Connect with healthcare providers
  • Stay in touch with family and friends

This is especially vital for rural communities, students, and those with limited income. Closing the digital gap gives everyone a fair shot—whether it’s in education, employment, or everyday life.

Funding Is Critical - and Your Voice Will Make the Difference

Here’s the challenge: Congress must approve the full funding for Maine. Without it, many Mainers, especially older adults, could be left without the internet access, devices, or training they need to thrive in a digital world.

Senator Susan Collins, as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, plays a key role in securing this funding. Her support could ensure that Maine receives all of the resources it was promised.

You can help! Contact Senator Collins and tell her that Maine needs the full BEAD funding it was promised to ensure that everyone has the tools and support they need to use the internet safely and confidently, no matter their age, income, or where they live.

No Mainer Left Behind

No one should be left behind simply because they lack internet access or digital literacy. By investing in broadband infrastructure and training, Maine can build a more connected, inclusive future for all.
