Detroit is among the newest Michigan members of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. The city offers free memberships for residents 60 and over to its 12 recreation centers. The city of Clawson also joined the network in 2024
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Attorney General Dana Nessel join AARP Michigan for a telephone town hall and a televised interview. Voters should feel confident that the election will be safe and the results accurate, they said.
Highlights include Don Was Detroit All Star Revue Tribute to John Lee Hooker, Leafar Village Tribute to Charlie Parker plus lineup of legendary global music performers. Festival will be broadcast on Detroit Public TV Channel 56 and WDET 101.9 FM Oct. 6-11 with expanded dates streamed online worldwide. AARP Michigan among sponsors.
The two-hour “MI Sisters and Friends: Conversations that Count” event enabled at-home viewers to vote on issue options. They arrived at a six-item health and wealth agenda to present to elected officials.
Almost all are worried the country is becoming more divided
Residents of Michigan nursing homes should be allowed outdoor visits with friends and family, and be given the option of indoor visitation, according to a state task-force report released this week.Since the start of the pandemic, nursing-home residents and staff have comprised 12% of Michigan’s confirmed coronavirus cases and 32% of deaths.
Tax-Aide offers free in-person and online tax preparation and assistance to low- and moderate-income taxpayers in Michigan and nationwide. Individuals interested in volunteering should apply by September 30th for the 2021 Tax Season. 
All eligible adults can now use an absentee ballot with no excuse necessary, after voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2018. They can also register to vote up through Election Day.
Virtual program scheduled for Sept. 17 will include celebrity panelists and experts, with the goal of building a strong policy agenda for African American women 50 and older. Everyone is invited to this free event.
The $28,300 grant, one of two awarded in Michigan this year, will be used to explore the impact of virtual programs on social isolation.
