AARP Michigan has sent more than 2,600 petitions to our Members of Congress in support of the Department of Labor rule to “Close the Loophole.”

AARP volunteer activist Annie Mae Holt of Detroit authored the following opinion piece on raising standards for financial advisers to retirees:

WASHINGTON, DC —AARP Michigan State President Thomas Kimble of Clarkston was among volunteers and staff who dropped off petitions containing more than 26,000 signatures at the U.S. Department of Labor this week in support of a conflict of interest standard, following the release of a proposed rule earlier this month.

Joyce LaFleur, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteer extraordinaire, is retiring after 16 years with the program.

WASHINGTON, DC —AARP along with members of the Save Our Retirement coalition praised the latest major step taken on a proposed rule by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) that would update requirements for those who give financial advice to individual retirement plan savers. DOL released the text of the rule and opened a public comment period for Americans to comment on a rule that would help those saving for retirement who lose an estimated 17 billion dollars per year due to bad investment advice.

AARP and the U.S. Small Business Administration will join forces to improve the chances for success of “encore entrepreneurs” – people 50 and older who are starting a business – at free workshops in Metro Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing during April.

Too many older women in Metro Detroit, in Michigan and across the country cannot afford to cover their basic needs. And too few families headed by single mothers are financially secure.
