What Minnesota Employers Need to Know About Paid Family and Medical Leave

Beginning January 1, 2026, Minnesota’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program will provide workers with job-protected, partially paid time off for medical and caregiving needs. As an employer, you’ll play a key role in supporting your team—and complying with the law.

AARP Minnesota supported this legislation as part of our commitment to strengthening financial security and caregiving support for working families across the state.


Family caregivers like Toni—one of 530,000 in Minnesota—will soon be able to

stay in the workforce while caring for loved ones, thanks to Paid Family and Medical Leave.


What Employers Need to Know

  • The program is state-run and funded through a 0.88% payroll premium, split between employer and employee.
  • Employers may choose to cover the full premium.
  • Small businesses (30 or fewer employees with lower wages) may qualify for reduced rates.
  • Employers can also opt to use a private plan that meets or exceeds state standards.
