Third Annual Classic Black Film Festival Turns Into a Family Affair

One hundred AARP members attended the third Classic Black Film Festival showcasing Oscar nominated African-American actresses: Jaunita Moore, Eartha Kitt, Diahann Caroll, Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, Cicely Tyson, Ruby Dee-Sun and Pam Grier.

The event was held at the Missouri History Museum, the perfect venue to watch the history created by these talented actresses who blazed a trail for future African-American Oscar winners.

What made this event special was that not only did they get to attend for free but many members, who had seen these movies before, had the opportunity to share them with their children and grandchildren. These classic films can be hard to find on your own. Many families watched together and participated in discussions afterwards at Bixby’s, the History Museum restaurant, or other eating establishments in the area that were recommended by AARP volunteers.

The festival lasted three days, October 9 through 11, with eight different movies and times.

Unlike other movie screenings where members are limited to one guest, members could invite as many friends and family as they wanted. Also, many people came early or stayed late to enjoy browsing around the Missouri History Museum and just spending time together.

Thank you to all who turned out and made this an unexpected family affair. We look forward to seeing more of you at the 4th Annual Classic Black Film Festival next year!
