Walkin' and Talkin'

If you think that the Kansas City's “Get Off the Couch” walkers stopped just because the program ended, you’re wrong.  The program, which began two years ago, has not been repeated, but some members of the walking group in Kansas City, including AARP volunteer Joyce Guess, are still walking and talking.

During the program, walkers convened on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and still do from the latter part of April through the first part of November.  “Our group includes several individuals of the original program and ladies from different churches in the area,” Guess explains. “While we really have no official leader, we just talk and decide on times and walking conditions. I maintain a list of phone numbers of walkers so if there is the need to cancel, I can reach out.”

The group continues to maintain a routine because the program helped educate them about reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and other debilitating ailments.

“Good exercise and fellowship is what we enjoy,” Guess concluded.
