AARP Montana is working with Montana Food Bank Network to publicize a new anti-hunger initiative, especially in the eastern part of the state, where many low-income, older residents live and are often homebound.
The Mail-a-Meal program targets these sparsely populated areas by sending 50-pound boxes of food directly to residents and by dispensing food supplies from central drop sites where pickup is convenient. In more than half of Montana’s 56 counties, at least a third of residents must travel more than 10 miles to get to the nearest supermarket.
AARP Montana is encouraging members to donate and volunteer to coordinate drop locations. For more information, go to mfbn.org/mail-a-meal or aarp.org/mt.
