Many Montanans find themselves financially vulnerable when they retire, with little money saved for their post-
employment years. AARP Montana is urging lawmakers to create the Montana Optional Retirement for Employees (MORE) savings plan, which would give more private-sector workers a way to save for retirement through payroll deductions.
About half of private-sector workers in the state—roughly 160,000 employees—work for employers that do not offer a retirement savings plan. People who have access to a work-based payroll-deduction plan are 15 times more likely to save for retirement than those who must contribute on their own to an IRA, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
