AARP Nevada Applauds Sisolak's Focus on Issues Facing Aging Nevadans

New Governor addressed key challenges facing the state’s growing 50-plus population in his State of the State Address last night.

LAS VEGAS, NV - Last night, new Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak gave his inaugural State of the State address in Carson City. As a non-partisan advocacy organization focused on the issues and concerns of Nevadans 50-plus, we listened with great interest as Governor Sisolak set his agenda for his administration and listened carefully for what it might mean for aging Nevadans and our over 340,000 members in the state.

We want to congratulate Governor Sisolak and his commitment to what he called a “healthy Nevada.” The Governor said it’s his priority to ensure, as the state’s top elected official, to provide access to health care by protecting those with pre-existing conditions, supporting Nevada’s Medicaid expansion and increasing access to mental health and substance abuse services.

Governor Sisolak also recognized the vital and difficult role family caregivers play in our state. He specifically talked about how the burden of medical bills and care for loved ones weighs on Silver State families. We are encouraged by his recognition of this existing and growing concern.

With Nevada’s aging population, the skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs was also a focus for Governor Sisolak and we welcome his focus on this key area. The Governor recognized the price gouging occurring and its impact on the state’s most vulnerable residents and vowed to take this on through his proposed Patient Protection Commission.

We are encouraged by Governor Sisolak’s focus on the issues and concerns important to Nevada’s growing 50-plus population. Through our non-partisan advocacy efforts, we will work across all political parties and affiliations to ensure the voices of our over 340,000 members across Nevada are heard and recognized.  AARP Nevada looks forward to working with Governor Sisolak to ensure Nevada’s 50-plus population lives their best lives as they age.
