Robert “Bob” Hesler of Bismarck is the recipient of the 2012 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service.

AARP North Dakota selected Hesler for his significant volunteer service and for the impact he has on the lives of others and on his community.

Hesler has been an AARP Tax-Aide Program volunteer for more than 10 years. Bob has consistently helped approximately 350 individuals complete and file their tax returns each tax season.

“He is always willing to help others and his enthusiasm for being of service encourages and inspires others to use their talents in similar ways,” said Bill Lardy of Bismarck, who nominated Hesler for the award.

In addition to helping people file their tax returns, Hesler also serves on the Board of Directors for the Bismarck-Burleigh County Senior Citizens Center, helps each fall with Medicare Part D enrollment as a volunteer Senior Health Insurance Counselor. Hesler also volunteers with his church and for several other organizations.

“Bob is very active in recruiting new volunteers, but more than that he leads by example, serving as a role model in the good work he exhibits, which really encourages new volunteers to get involved,” Lardy said.

The Andrus Award is AARP’s most prestigious and visible volunteer award for community service and symbolizes that individuals have the power and ability to make a difference in the lives of others. The award is given to one North Dakotan annually.

AARP North Dakota President Rodger Wetzel said, “This award acts as a symbol not only to our members, but people of all ages, that we can all work together for positive social change. AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve.”
